The tones of which the theme and the answer of ordinary fugues are comprised belong to the scales based on the tonic and the dominant. Of the two basic scales which are required, one furnishes the tones for the opening and the other, the tones for the answering statement. To find out which tones of these two scales correspond to each other in a fugal answer, the following device may serve as a guide: the basic scale of the key is superimposed on the scale of the dominant so that the first degree of one scale and the fourth and fifth degrees of the other scale align both in the middle and at the end of the scales. If we take, for instance the key of C Major, the tones of the scale on c are placed first and those of the scale on g, the dominant, are placed underneath them in diatonic order.
